"It's complicated," Cambodian people tell me when trying to explain their history.

"You are very brave to travel alone," one lady told me. "They say it is different now, but I am still afraid."

"That is Sinn Sisamouth on the radio," my friend Aki told me. "That is my mother's favorite singer. He was killed by the Red Khmer."

When the Red Khmer come up in conversation, there is always a lost brother, sister, grandparents, a father that was never known, years of hiding and fear, lies, denial. There are no answers, just blood and bones and tears.

But the most disgusting thing of all is how most of the world governments turned their backs to the killing and supported the Red Khmer. How so many people believe the lies when they are convinient, but what can they say to the piles of bones?

Leaving Cambodia, I sat next to a Spanish lady on the plane. She had only gone to Siem Reap to see Angkor.

"Did you travel around the rest of the country?" she asked. I had, 2 weeks all together. "What I don't understand and maybe you know is, who put all the bombs in the ground? The Americans? The Vietnamese?" No, I said, it was the Red Khmer, to keep the people in the country.

Then she asked the question everyone in Cambodia has: "They did it?! But why? Why would they do it to their own people?"
